Ultimaker Door

I have wanted to put a door on my ultimaker for a while now, to help stabilize temperatures inside and keep prints from pulling off the build plate. I feel like it’ll also give the machine a bit more of a professional look which is always fun.

I found a model on thingiverse that I decided to use for the door. It has files for laser cutting the door out and printing out the rest of the pieces.

The nuts I picked up for the door hardware were ever so slightly too big to fit in the insert locations for them after I printed the models. I didn’t want to reprint and waste plastic, and I also didn’t want to try sanding anything to make them fit, so I decided to use a clean soldering iron to heat set them into the plastic, which turned out great. The only thing I had to be careful of was to not hit the plastic with the iron itself and to make sure I got them in straight so screws could thread in easily.

In case you wondered what the door would look like with LED side lighting, the engraving was a test piece so I could try out some things before making some acrylic signs.
